How can you justify Fawad Alam not being selected
So it was October 2017, a Sri Lankan team low on confidence, a Sri Lankan team already having been whitewashed twice in the year, a Sri Lankan team which had recently tested the defeat in the hands of Bangladesh in their own home soil was going to play a test series against Pakistan in UAE, a venew where Pakistan has not lost a test series since opting it as their alternate home. No way this Sri Lankan team would even compete with Pakistan, let alone defeating Pakistan, and what whitewash? none of their most optimistic fans would have thought this.

Why Pakistan lost those matches, this is another debate but one thing that got clear was that Pakistan started missing the experience of Misbah and Younis in their batting middle order. Pakistan has not played a test match since, and now they are to play England and Ireland in the testing English conditions and if you ever need experience in your middle order, this is the time when you need it.

PCB announced their squad for the tour and surprisingly, the tour in which you need experience, the squad was very much thin of experience. Usman Salahuddin, Fakhar Zaman, Saad Ali, Imam-ul-haq and Faheem Ashraf are the players to make their debuts, and Shadab Khan, Hasan Ali and Haris Sohail also quite novices to the Test arena. And a player with the highest first class average ever in Pakistan and a handful of First Class, if not International experience was again ignored.

For the Sri Lankan series it was very much surpring when Fawad was not selected, after all that was the first series after the retirement of Misbah and Younis and somebody had to fill their shoes and who else could have been a better candidate then FAWAD Alam, a man who made century in his debut against the same very opposition. After the shameful loss it was thought that PCB would have learnt their lesson. For England and Ireland tour it was obvious that Fawad would make it, but no, as stated by chief selector we have found better players than Fawad Alam. Accepted that Saad Ali had a stellar First Class Season, but his experience is no where near to Fawad Alam's.

Fawad Alam has wonderful domestic stats, but he is always very unlucky when it comes to selection for Pakistan Team. He had outstanding First Class Seasons Averaging 71.9 in one season, but at that time we had a settled middle order with Misbah and Younis still playing. Everyone thought that his turn will come when Misbah and Younis would retire and now when they have retired has he have to wait for someone else to retire?

Mickey Arthur focuses a lot on physical fitness and Fawad Alam is one of the fittest of the lot. Not just that he is a spectacular fielder as well. He could also provide with some left arm spin if needed, as Pakistan have not selected a specialist spinner other than Shadab Khan. His batting form has dipped in the current season, but still has averaged 41.71 for the season, better than a selected player namely, Imam-ul-haq.

He has good List A stats as well but is not selected on the reason that he is quite old-fashioned player who focuses on rotating the strike and can't hit boundaries. Okay, but in test cricket what is more precious than rotating the strike, getting to the other end, does not allowing the bowler to settle and ultimately releasing the pressure. Currently Fawad Alam is one of the best if not the best test match batsman in Pakistan, how on earth can you not include him in the squad of 16.
